Explanatory Note

This Bill requires the Minister of Health and Wellness to enter into service agreements with mental healthcare providers who agree to treat any person insured under M.S.I. in the Province.

An Act to Amend Chapter 197
of the Revised Statutes, 1989,
the Health Services and Insurance Act

WHEREAS at least one in five persons is touched by a mental health issue, but not every Nova Scotian has immediate access to a mental healthcare provider;

THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Chapter 197 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Health Services and Insurance Act, is amended by adding immediately after Section 8 the following Section:

    9 (1) The Minister shall enter into a service agreement under the M.S.I. Plan with a provider of mental healthcare services.

    (2) An agreement under subsection (1) must include access to mental healthcare services for all insured persons.
