Explanatory Notes

Clause 1 adds a definition of "Paris Agreement".

Clause 2 establishes compliance with the Paris Agreement as an environmental and economic goal for the Province.

Clause 3 requires the Minister of Environment to introduce legislation to update the Province's environmental and economic goals to cover the period between December 31, 2018, and January 1, 2030.

An Act to Amend Chapter 7
of the Acts of 2007,
the Environmental Goals
and Sustainable Prosperity Act

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Section 2 of Chapter 7 of the Acts of 2007, the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act, as amended by Chapter 42 of the Acts of 2012, is further amended by adding immediately after clause (e) the following clause:

(ea) "Paris Agreement" means the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted on December 12, 2015, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference;

2 Subsection 4(2) of Chapter 7, as enacted by Chapter 42 of the Acts of 2012, is amended by adding immediately after clause (f) the following clause:

(fa) greenhouse gas emissions are, by 2030, compliant with the intents and goals agreed to in the Paris Agreement;

3 Chapter 7 is further amended by adding immediately after Section 4 the following Section:

4A No later than December 31, 2018, the Minister shall introduce legislation to update the goals listed subsection 4(2) to cover the period between December 31, 2018, and January 1, 2030.
