Explanatory Note

This Bill

(a) expands the objects and powers of Housing Nova Scotia to include the provision of financial assistance directly to Housing Nova Scotia's clients; and

(b) authorizes the making of regulations related to the financial assistance program.

An Act to Amend Chapter 213
of the Revised Statutes, 1989,
the Housing Nova Scotia Act

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Section 7 of Chapter 213 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Housing Nova Scotia Act, is amended by

(a) striking out "and" at the end of clause (e);

(b) striking out the period at the end of clause (f) and substituting "; and"; and

(c) adding immediately after clause (f) the following clause:

    (g) promote and provide financial assistance to persons the Corporation determines to be persons in housing need.

2 Subsection 9(1) of Chapter 213, as amended by Chapter 30 of the Acts of 1990, is further amended by

(a) striking out the period at the end of clause (g) and substituting a semicolon; and

(b) adding immediately after clause (g) the following clause:

    (h) provide financial assistance to persons requiring such assistance in order to obtain or maintain housing.

3 Subsection 13(1) of Chapter 213, as amended by Chapter 30 of the Acts of 1990, is further amended by adding immediately after clause (aa) the following clauses:

    (ab) respecting the application, conditions, management and supervision and any other matter necessary for the provision of financial assistance by the Corporation pursuant to Section 9;

    (ac) defining any word or expression used but not defined in this Act;
