An Act to Reintroduce Local School Boards
WHEREAS elected school boards enable local participation in public education;
AND WHEREAS elected school boards are representative of their communities and give local families and community members input into the education of their children;
AND WHEREAS school boards act as agents of government, providing oversight and monitoring of the local education system;
THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:
1 This Act may be cited as the Local School Boards Act.
"Minister" means the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development;
"Report" means the School Board Reintroduction Report commissioned under Section 3.
3 The Minister shall commission a School Board Reintroduction Report to determine an effective system of oversight by school boards at the county level.
(a) the number of school boards required for the Province;
(b) the location of each school board;
(c) the composition of a school board, including the number of members and representation of under-represented groups in its county; and
(d) the powers, duties and responsibilities of a school board.
5 The Minister shall make the Report public on or before January 1, 2026.
6 Subject to Section 8, the Minister shall authorize school board elections to be held on June 1, 2026.
7 Subject to Section 8, the Minister shall implement the findings in the Report at the beginning of the 2026-27 school year.
8 The money required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of money appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
