Aquaculture Modernization Strategy Act

An Act to Modernize Aquaculture in Nova Scotia

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Aquaculture Modernization Strategy Act.

2 In this Act,

"Department" means the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture;

"Minister" means the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture;

"Strategy" means the Aquaculture Modernization Strategy created under Section 3.

3 The Minister shall, within six months of the coming into force of this Act, consult with the aquaculture industry, non-profit groups and Nova Scotians across the Province to create an Aquaculture Modernization Strategy for the Province.

4 The Strategy must contain

(a) specific actions to be taken by the Government to improve local demand for Nova Scotian aquaculture products;

(b) specific actions to be taken by the Government to improve opportunities for Nova Scotian aquaculture producers to export their products to other provinces of Canada and other countries;

(c) improved environmental protection processes; and

(d) an implementation deadline no later than January 1, 2027.

5 (1) The Minister shall make the Strategy publicly available by causing it to be posted on the website of the Department.

(2) The Department's website must be updated at least monthly to show progress made on meeting the Strategy's targets.
