Explanatory Note

This Bill gives the Halifax Regional Municipality Council the authority to enact by-laws with respect to campaign financing for elections to the Council.

An Act to Amend Chapter 39
of the Acts of 2008,
the Halifax Regional Municipality Charter

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Chapter 39 of the Acts of 2008, the Halifax Regional Municipality Charter, is amended by adding immediately after Section 60 the following Section:

60A The Council may make by-laws, not inconsistent with Sections 49A and 49B of the Municipal Elections Act, respecting contributions and expenses for the election campaigns of candidates for the office of Mayor or councillor including, without limiting the generality of the foregoing, election campaign spending limits, maximum contribution amounts, disclosure requirements, eligibility to contribute and dates for making contributions.
