* Joseph Howe (December 13, 1804 - June 1, 1873) was a printer, a journalist and a politician. He was editor of the Novascotian from 1821 to 1841 and joint editor of the Morning Chronicle from 1844 to 1846. He represented various electoral districts in the House of Assembly starting in 1836 and was Premier from 1860 to 1863. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1867 to 1873 and was a member of the federal cabinet. He was Lieutenant Governor from May 10, 1873, until his death a few weeks later. "[H]is renowned defense of freedom of the press in March, 1835 and his role in winning Responsible Government for Nova Scotia in 1848 have assured him a primary place in the province's history".
