Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:
1 This Act may be cited as the Legislative Internship Act.
2 In this Act,
(a) "intern" means an individual who satisfies the prescribed criteria for selection to an internship and who is selected as an intern in the prescribed manner;
(b) "Program" means the Legislative Internship Program established pursuant to Section 3.
3 Subject to Section 6, the House of Assembly shall, before June 15, 2013, establish a Legislative Internship Program.
4 The purpose of the Program is to provide interns with an opportunity to gain practical experience in the day-to-day work of the House of Assembly and a comprehensive knowledge of the legislative process in the Province.
5 The House of Assembly, or a committee, officer or employee of the House of Assembly designated by the House of Assembly for the purpose of this Section, may
(a) prescribe criteria for the selection of interns;
(b) prescribe the manner of selection of interns;
(c) prescribe terms and conditions of internships;
(d) prescribe the duties and responsibilities of interns;
(e) where the House of Assembly considers it necessary, establish standards, requirements, guidelines or policies respecting the Program;
(f) prescribe terms and conditions for the receipt of internship services by members of the House of Assembly;
(g) subject to Section 6, establish funding criteria for the provision of internship services;
(h) prescribe anything that the House of Assembly considers necessary or advisable to carry out effectively the intent and purpose of this Act.
6 The money required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of moneys appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
