WHEREAS Nova Scotia has a rich and varied culture of which it is proud;
AND WHEREAS part of this culture is that of our African-Canadian heritage;
AND WHEREAS On November 8, 1946, Viola Desmond was refused admittance to general seating in a theatre because of her colour;
AND WHEREAS as a direct result of her taking a stand against this discrimination, laws allowing segregation practices were repealed;
THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:
1 This Act may be cited as the Viola Desmond Day Act.
2 Throughout the Province, in each and every year, November 8th shall be kept and observed under the name of Viola Desmond Day.
