An Act to Establish a 211 Telephone System
to Provide Information on Available Services

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Information "211" Act.

2 The purpose of this Act is to establish the number "211" as a telephone number for use in the Province to access information about a full range of community, social, health and government services.

3 In this Act,

(a) "information" means information respecting community, social, health and government services;

(b) "Minister" means the Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations;

(c) "telephone information system" means a telephone system for the providing of information to the public that automatically connects a person dialling the digits 211 to a public information answering point through telephone network facilities.

4 (1) The Minister has the general supervision and management of this Act and the regulations.

(2) The Minister may delegate a power or duty conferred or imposed on the Minister by this Act or the regulations to persons designated by the Minister.

5 (1) Subject to Section 8, the Minister, in consultation with the United Way of Canada, shall develop and implement a Province-wide telephone information system.

(2) In developing a telephone information system, the Minister shall consider Canadian and American telephone information systems currently in place.

6 Subject to Section 8, such employees as are required for the purpose of this Act may be appointed in accordance with the Civil Service Act.

7 (1) The Governor in Council may make regulations

(a) respecting the information to be made available pursuant to this Act;

(b) defining any word or expression used but not defined in this Act;

(c) respecting any matter or thing necessary or advisable to carry out effectively the intent and purpose of this Act.

(2) The exercise by the Governor in Council of the authority contained in subsection (1) shall be regulations within the meaning of the Regulations Act.

8 The sums required for the purpose of this Act shall be paid out of money appropriated by the Legislature for that purpose.
