CHAIR
Brendan Maguire
VICE-CHAIR
Suzanne Lohnes-Croft
THE CHAIR: Good morning everyone, I call this meeting of the Human Resources Committee to order. My name is Brendan Maguire, I’m the Chair of the committee. We’ll do quick introductions, starting to my right.
[The committee members introduced themselves.]
THE CHAIR: We’ve got a quickie today. We are going to do some ABC appointments - agencies, boards and commissions. We’ll start with Rafah DiCostanzo.
RAFAH DICOSTANZO: For the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, I so move that Catherine Hartling be appointed as member, Antigonish-Guysborough, and Nayo Upshaw be appointed member-at-large to the Council on African-Canadian Education.
THE CHAIR: Mr. Johns.
BRAD JOHNS: No criticisms of the two members coming forward, but I do want to point out that there were 11 vacancies and 16 applicants. My understanding is nine of those were men and seven of those were women. As the critic for African Affairs, I find it somewhat disheartening that they couldn’t have appointed more than two people for the 11 vacancies. Just a comment, thank you.
THE CHAIR: Duly noted.
Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.
The motion is carried.
Mr. MacKay.
HUGH MACKAY: For the Department of Labour and Advanced Education, I so move that the following be appointed to the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency: Brad Smith, as Chair and member, Construction Sector; Heather Cruickshanks, as member, Construction Sector; Gordon MacLean, as member-at-large and Vice-Chair; Michel Okoh as member-at-large; Trent Soholt as member-at-large; and Carol Dayment as member, Industrial/Manufacturing Sector.
THE CHAIR: Are there any comments or questions?
Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.
The motion is carried.
Ms. Suzanne Lohnes-Croft.
SUZANNE LOHNES-CROFT: I so move that Sheila Blair-Reid and Peter G. Fardy be appointed as members, GIC appointments to the Dalhousie University Foundation.
THE CHAIR: Mr. Johns.
BRAD JOHNS: Similar to the other one, I just want to point out that we’re making two applications here for five vacancies. I believe prior to that, there was nobody on the board, so it would be nice to see more applicants come forward.
THE CHAIR: Duly noted.
Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.
The motion is carried.
That will wrap up the ABCs. I do want to welcome Mr. Harrison aboard. It’s good to see you. You’re going to have a lot of fun. (Laughter) They don’t call this the most entertaining committee for nothing.
In our May 28th agenda setting, the committee approved two topics with the witness named as Tracey Taweel, CEO of the Office of Immigration. Since then, Kelliann Dean has replaced Ms. Taweel as CEO. Do we have unanimous consent to change that to Ms. Dean - to extend the invitation?
Would all those in favour of the motion, please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.
The motion is carried.
The next meeting we have here is scheduled for August 27th from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and it will be similar to today, which is ABC appointments.
With that, we’ll see you on August 27th. Have a great day.
[The committee adjourned at 10:05 a.m.]
