An Act to Reduce the Smoking of Tobacco

WHEREAS Nova Scotia has the highest smoking and e-cigarette usage rate in the country;

THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Smoking Reduction Act.

2 In this Act, (a) "Minister" means the Minister of Health and Wellness;

(b) "virtual cessation program" means a program, offered via internet communication, designed to encourage persons to cease the use of tobacco.

3 (1) Subject to Section 4, the Minister shall establish a virtual cessation program with a primary audience of the general public.

(2) Subject to Section 4, the Minister shall establish a virtual cessation program focused on the cessation of vaping with a primary audience of youth.

(3) The content of a virtual cessation program is as determined by the Minister, in consultation with health-care professionals and educators.

4 The money required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of money appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
