Explanatory Note

This Bill establishes the Office of Fire and Emergency Services in the public service.

An Act to Amend Chapter 376
of the Revised Statutes, 1989,
the Public Service Act,
to Establish the Office of
Fire and Emergency Services

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Chapter 376 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Public Service Act, is amended by adding immediately after Section 25M the following Section:

25N (1) There shall be an Office of Fire and Emergency Services.

(2) The Office of Fire and Emergency Services shall be presided over by the Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations who has the supervision, direction and control of all affairs and matters relating to the Office and who shall supervise the performance of the functions of the Office.

(3) The Governor in Council may appoint a person to be Commissioner of the Office of Fire and Emergency Services who shall be paid such salary as the Governor in Council determines and who shall perform such duties as are from time to time prescribed by the Governor in Council.

(4) The Commissioner of the Office of Fire and Emergency Services is a deputy head in accordance with the Civil Service Act.

(5) Such other officers and employees as are required for the purposes of the Office of Fire and Emergency Services may be appointed pursuant to the Civil Service Act and that Act applies to those employees.
