An Act to Bring Newly Trained Doctors
Home to Nova Scotia

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Newly Trained Nova Scotia Doctors Act.

2 In this Act,

(a) "Committee" means the Committee established pursuant to this Act;

(b) " residency position" means a position for students with an undergraduate medical degree to practise medicine under the supervision of duly qualified medical practitioner .

3 The Minister of Health and Wellness shall establish a Committee composed of representatives of the Department of Health and Wellness, the Dalhousie University Medical School, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia and The Medical Society of Nova Scotia.

4 (1) Subject to Section 5, the Committee shall, before January 1, 2012, develop a plan for the creation of ten additional residency positions in the Province for medical students originally from the Province who have completed an undergraduate medical degree in a medical school outside of Canada .

(2) The plan must

(a) include a mechanism to ensure the residency positions are available to the medical students referred to in subsection (1); and

(b) identify the types of residency positions needed and their location based upon provincial and local community need.

5 The moneys required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of moneys appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
